Lag Eye Screws are a type of attachment point and are also referred to as Eye Screws, Lag Eyes, or even Screw Eyes. They can be used to attach balustrade wires to Timber Posts or to support wire (as in trellis or
vertical landscaping) or pretty much anything you can dream up. Our Lag Eye Screws are AISI 316 grade stainless
steel.
Dimensions: D = ~ 5.9mm; D2 = ~ 6.5mm; L = ~ 32mm; L1 = ~ 40mm; L2 = ~ 50mm

  • 6mm x 50mm Lag Eye Screws (or Lag Screw Eyes)  have a MUCH smaller head and are more streamlined, designed to match the look of our Mini Eye Bolts for a sophisticated architectural look.  They also serve as the fastening points that anchor a run of balustrading wire into a post.
  • Choose a shorter Lag Eye Screw for attachment into either pine or hardwood.  There is more than enough bite and you avoid the possibility of torqueing off a longer screw into hard timber. Choosing a longer length is only appropriate in special circumstances.
  • Mini refers to the size of the head/eye of the screw. The 60mm x 50mm Lag Eye Screws are specifically formed to work with either a manually  or a hydraulically swaged jaw end on the wire run.
  • Screw eyes are screwed into the posts or uprights directly. To make the job easier, try our ‘6mm Lag Eye Screw Driver’ Simply put, IT ROCKS – saves your wrists, speeds  up the install and demonstrates a bit of ingenuity

Usage Tips

  • Eye Screw fittings are attachment points that do not attach directly to wire rope. They are designed to attach to a flat or round substrate. They are strongest when the fasteners are under a tension load.
  • Wire rope passed through a screw eye in a loop, should be 'protected' by a thimble. The thimble acts to distribute the load and prevent the wire being pulled through a radius that is tighter/smaller than is recommended. These fittings are designed to work with open turnbuckles, closed turnbuckles, manually swaged fittings, and hydraulically swaged terminals.
  • The 40mm length refers to the thread length - the whole screw is actually more like 50mm in length from tip to tail. A longer Lag Eye Screw is also avilable - a 6mm x 75mm.

Installation Considerations

Longer Lag Eye Screws work best in situations where you need to

  • go into concrete (and you need the extra length/bite for use with a standard Plastic Plug); or
  • go through render or siding before you hit an anchoring stud; or
  • if you want the 'eye' to protrude (visibly) from your attachment post.

In application, the 40mm length is ideal for fastening to a common corner post as the screws are very robust/strong (use a 3mm pilot hole) and because of the length, they will NOT collide in a 90mm x 90mm corner post (this is the most common
size of timber posts).  And contrary to popular belief, the 75mm length is NOT stronger - in fact it is more likely to torque off in hardwood.  So unless you know you need the extra depth or clearance - we strongly recommend the shorter of the two 6mm Lag Eye Screws.
