Wires are a flexible, round, bar of an alloy of metal. Individual wires are commonly formed by a manufacturing process called Drawing. This is a process whereby a supply of metal is literally drawn/pulled through a hole in a Die or draw plate at an extremely steady rate to create a uniform size. Wire produced for structural purposes is available in many standard sizes which are defined by their cross-sectional area.
Drawn wire can then be used in a form that is grouped together (multistranded) or form that is individuated (single stranded). Broadly speaking, multistranded wire is classified by its purpose – either conductive or structural. Structural wires that are used to bear a mechanical or structural load are often created in the form of Wire Rope. Conductive wires are used to transport electricity and telecommunications signals which may contain a single strand (solid core) wire or multiple separate strands in either an aligned or braided form.
