So it came in a coil… Wire – be it stainless, galvanized, LAN, copper multicore or whatever – generally is shipped in 1 of two forms. Either as a Packaged Coil or a Reeled Length. This is a “how to” in extracting a length of wire from a coil (… basic steps that should ensure that you don’t create an epic mess of twisted wire that will probably ruin your day and at the very least waste a couple of hours while teaching your associates a whole NEW vocabulary).
Step 1
Keep the Package AROUND the wire. It could be cardboard, a box, or even a plastic sleeve. Do NOT tear it off. Simply open the middle (small X using a razor knife works…) to access the center of the coil. The package acts as a container so the wire doesn’t simply unwind at random.
Step 2
Clip the Zips. The coil will generally be secured by zip ties or some sort of wrap. Simply remove the minimum number of zip ties or the least amount of wrap that will allow you to access a length of wire appropriate to your project.
Step 3
Remove the wire from the Center of the Coil. This ensures that the wire is removed in the manner opposite to how the coil was developed in the first place. Do NOT take it from the outside – you have been officially warned – Unless you have a specific tool designed and built for managing coils of wire (they DO exist…). Generally, the trick to maintaining your sanity is to pull the wire gently from the center while allowing it to untwist in a natural manner.
Step 4
Close the Package. Whether its plastic, cardboard or a wrap, generally a couple of pieces of tape (e.g. packing tape) will be enough to ensure the entegrity of the package (unless you start using it as a frisbee…)
