4 Steps to Deploy Wire from a Reel

So it came on a Reel… and you can call it a spool or reel – but PLEASE, NOT a pulley 🙂 Generally, wire – be it stainless, galvanized, LAN, copper multicore or whatever – generally is shipped in 1 of two forms.  Either as a Packaged Coil or a Reeled Length.  This is a “how to” in extracting a length of wire ffrom a reel (… basic steps that should ensure that you don’t create an epic mess of twisted wire that will probably ruin your day and at the very least waste a couple of hours while teaching your associates a whole NEW vocabulary).

Step 1

Keep the Wire on the Reel.  The reel is the form upon which the wire is wound. Its simple, but the wire wants to be straight – so if you just take off the cover and let it ‘loose’ – you will have a FUGLY mess.  Keep the reel controlled and the wire under tension so the wire doesn’t simply unwind at random.

Step 2

Clip the Wrap. The reel will generally be cover by some sort of wrap. In fact, it may have multiple layers.  Simply remove the tape and wrap to allow you to access a length of wire appropriate to your project.

Step 3

Remove the wire from the outside layer. This ensures that the wire is removed in the manner opposite to how the reel was developed in the first place. Do NOT take it from the inside – you have been officially warned.  Generally, the trick to maintaining your sanity is to pull the wire gently off the reel (situated either through a core support (broomstick?) or a set of rollers) while allowing the wire to untwist in a natural manner.

Step 4

Wrap the Reel. Just grab the wrap you saved and wrap up the wire, generally a couple of pieces of tape (e.g. packing tape) will be enough to ensure the entegrity of the wrap and reel (unless you start using it as a footee ball…)
