Tools to Repair Gym Equipment Cables

Tell me about Gym Cables…

The conversations start like “…  we manufacture, repair and fit cables to gym equipment and automated machines that can have weight stacks up to 200kg. Obviously we want to ensure that our work hold up in a commercial gym environment –  both from a safety  and durability stand point.  So I was wondering what tool would suit these kinds of installation applications…  And how we could tell if we need something ‘heavier duty’? “

Technical Background

A properly swaged fitting will exceed the strength of the cable – period.  That is why people ‘rate’ the cable, not the fittings. This characteristic relates to fittings for all ‘proper’ wire rope for gym cable repair (how FAR the strength of the wire exceeds a 200kg load depends on the structure, core, and grade of the wire rope). Also, a properly swaged connection can be identified by its finished dimensions (and that is how you deal with testing, safety, and certification)… Basically, you don’t stand a chance of creating something that is utterly dependable unless you know EXACTLY what you are trying to create and what characteristics will ensure that it will be faultless.

The REAL problem

The real issue/problem is matching the dies (in the swaging tool) to the dimensionality, material, and size of the chosen fittings – assuming the fittings have been properly chosen based on the size and fill capacity (structure/core) of the target cable. But any competent gym cable fitting and cable supplier should be able to lay that our for you and explain it clearly…

The Answer

Yes, that Heavy Duty Hydraulic tool gets used (by many) for the application you have in mind. It is offered with two sets of dies (round and hex) and works fine for the 3.0mm and 4.0mm gym cables used on (most) equipment. And It certainly has enough power.  Another option is the Professional Hydraulic Swager as that takes the round dies required for proper gym cable repair and has a much wider range of available dies – both in sets and individually.
