Its a super easy to use 1.2mm Stainless Steel Wire Rope for the DIY guy who wants that economical structural wire – used by both Professionals and DIY’s, it is excellent with all fittings however, it is NOT recommended for coastal or marine applications.

Wire Structure:

Three common wire strand constructions are:

  • 1×19 indicates 19 thin wires twisted together in a silky and therefore smooth finish. Consequently, 19 individual wires twisted together construct a single strand of our premium wire. This is the least flexible wire structure. As a result, it is the easiest to keep clean.
  • 7×7 indicates a collection of 49 individual wires grouped as 7 sub-strands of 7 wires each. Consequently, 7 wire bundles twisted together form a single strand. This is more (medium) flexible wire than 1×19. As a result, it is for ‘general purpose’ applications and is most economical because it is commonly available.
  • 7×19 indicates a collection of 133 individual wires grouped as 7 sub-strands of 19 wires each. Consequently, 7 wire bundles of 19 wires twisted together form a single strand. This is our most flexible wire for use in rigging or small cranes or winches rather than balustrade construction. Low Cost Wire does not recommend 7×19 wire for balustrade construction.

…In conclusion, the more wires twisted to make a strand, the more flexible is the strand of wire because it deforms/bends without damage.

Application & Use

  • First of all, this wire must be mechanically fastened.
  • Cutting of the wire  is best done using Parrot Beak cutters (collapsing trapezoidal design) rather than shears or a grinder.
  • Terminal Loops are formed with manual swaging. In addition, terminal loops must use stainless steel thimbles  (eyelets) to retain the strength of the wire by distributing the load along  the entire length of wire in the terminal loop (available here). Recommended for all structures.
  • Manually swage with Ferrules (or crimps or hand swages) rather than Wire Rope Grips. Nickel Coated Copper is used instead of Aluminum because matching alloys is important. As a result, catastrophic swaging failure will not occur. Aluminium swages WILL cause a dissimilar alloys reaction and as a result corrode  the Stainless Steel wire.  Low Cost Wire strongly recommends an All-in-1 swaging tool. Recommended for all structures
  • Hydraulic swaging  is done using a hydraulic press either bench mounted or hand held. Hydraulic swaging for architectural purposes may economically use a  Professional  Hydraulic Swaging Tool while remaining work safe. These tools generate pressure ‘spot’ welds. Low Cost Wire recommends that hydraulic swaging may use a bench mounted hydraulic press which can also compress the swages. Recommended for all wire rope structures.
