Lengths of wire less than 100M are cut and labelled as a coil. Lengths of 150M and above are (generally) delivered on a reel however, small lengths can be put on a drum for a small additional cost (please refer to our Reeling Service

This 4.0mm Galvanised Steel Wire Rope Nylon Coated is super easy to use wire for the DIY guy who wants the material to build their own thing – used by both Professionals and DIY’s, it is excellent with all fittings however, and it is Marine Grade (2070) hot dipped galvanised for use coastal or marine applications.  The nylon coating is thin but strong and results in a smooth wire that will not damage pulleys (e.g. on Gym Equipment) and is a suitable OEM replacement productr. Other uses extend to:

  • Picture (statue?)  Hanging
  • Working rope (over pulleys)
  • Wire rope slings
  • Garage door cables
  • Winch ropes

This 4.0mm Galvanised Steel Wire Rope Nylon Coated is considered a highly flexible wire making it very easy to work with and has virtually no stretch coefficient. Its ease of use makes it excellent for use with Thimble and Ferrule fittings and acceptable for use with hydraulically swaged fittings.

E.G. – choose a quantity of “8” of the 10M length to select a single length of 80 Metres.

All quantities of Wire Rope are cut and shipped as a single length unless otherwise specifically ordered with a ‘cut to length’ service. (additional charge per length of wire to cut to a measurement, coil, label, and wrap separately – see our services section on this website).

There are three ‘structures’ of 4.0mm Galvanised Wire Rope generally available

  • 7×19 which indicates 19 thin wires twisted together in a substrand, then 7 substrands are twisted in a silky smooth finish. This totals to 133 individual wires twisted together in constructing a single strand of this our most flexible premium wire.
  • 1×19 which indicates 1 strand formed by 19 individual wires twisted together (also used for balustrading to provide negligible stretch and minimal flexibility – and here we recommend only hydraulically swaged
    fittings); and
  • 7×7 which indicates a collection of 49 individual wires which are grouped as 7 substrands of 7 wires each –
    twisted together. It is often used for ballustrading as an ecomonical alternative for 1×19..

…Simply put, the more wires that are twisted to make a strand, the more flexible the strand of wire becomes.

Application & Use

  • This wire may be mechanically fastened  or manually or hydraulically swaged.
  • Cutting of the wire  is best done using Parrot Beak cutters (collapsing trapezoidal design)
  • Terminal Loops are formed with Mechanical fastening or manual swaging.Terminal loops must use thimbles  (eyelets) to retain the strength of the wire by distributing the load along  the entire length of wire in the terminal loop.
  • Mechanical fastening is done with Wire Rope Grips (Bulldog Grips) Low Cost Wire recommends using three per terminal loop for safety purposes.
  • Manual swaging is done using Ferrules (or crimps or hand swages) and can be Nickel Coated Copper or Aluminium as both are safe with Galvanised Wire Rope. A Manual All -in-1 swaging tool is recommended – as pliers are simply inadequate.
  • Hydraulic swaging  is done using a hydraulic press – either bench mounted or hand held. Hydraulic swaging  may  economically use a  Professional Hydraulic Swaging Tool. These tools generate
    pressure ‘spot’ welds. Low Cost Wire strongly recomends that hydraulic swaging for lifting and marine
    applications use a bench mounted hydraulic press which can generate pressure ‘seam’ welds.
