What is the diameter of Coated Wire?

Referenced Wire Diameter of all wire is the diameter of the wire itself – always.  Both of these wires are 0.6mm, but one is coated.

Wire size is referenced as this (along with the structure) reflects the strength (MBS) of the cable.

If the wire is coated, then an overall diameter is noted in the Additional Information Tab and/or in the description. e.g. In the case of the 0.6mm 1X7 G316 Clear Coated Stainless Steel Wire Rope, the overall diameter is actually 0.8mm.

So when choosing swages, thimbles, and tools – the size you use depends on whether you strip the coating off before terminating the wire (recommended to preserve the ‘strength’ of the wire as the coating acts like a lubricant under high load) or leave it on.

And for S&G’s, each coating varies in how it increases the diameter of wire (nylon as a stiffer coating is generally a smaller increase than PVC which is a much softer coating) CLICK HERE to find out MORE about coatings…
