Oval Stainless Steel Ferrule Selection and Use

Oval stainless steel ferrules are intended to be installed with a hydraulic crimper using round dies. They may be used on many things, but they are only recommended for use on stainless steel wire ropes. Ferrules made of stainless steel (G304 or G316) are used together with stainless steel wire ropes  to create an extremely corrosion resistant spliced connection.

For a given wire diameter, the choice of ferrule size and die size depends on the Fill factor of the rope that is being swaged.

The dimensions table below (based on testing and data based on published by Talurit) applies to wire ropes made of stainless steel single layer steel wire ropes with round strands and rope grade G304 (A2)  to G316 (A4).  Data is valid when wire ropes should conform to EN 12385-4 and 5. The types of rope should be either Right Hand Ordinary Lay (RHOL) or Lang Lay (LL).

For different  grades of wire rope and higher fill factor, please consult with your engineer in charge.

Usage Notes:

  1. All selection tables are recommendations built on experience, test results, standard requirements and must be seen as guidelines only. There will always be cases where some specifications are diff erent from what is proven
  2. Stainless steel as a material is not included in the EN standard for wire ropes.
  3. For maximum effectiveness, the stainless steel oval ferrules are swaged according to our specified swaging method for turnback ferrules. Please refer to the swaging instructions for turnback ferrules
  4. We do not guarantee strength of slings for lifting activities made of Oval Stainless Steel ferrules. A termination performed according to our instructions will normally withstand a tensile strength of 90% of the minimum breaking strain (MBS) of the wire rope. Statistically valid destruction testing must be conducted to determine actual connection strength.
  5. If the achieved “Diam after Pressing” is higher than indicated in our tables or outside of the tolerance given after swage dimensions, special care must be taken! This is an indication that something is wrong – proceed with caution. Always contact our technical department for guidance.
